Antibiotic resistance may persist for months after the end of treatment

Antibiotic treatment, for example with trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole, erythromycin, a penicillin, or a cephalosporin, results in a higher prevalence of resistance to these antibiotics in Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pyogenes, that may persist for many months after the end of treatment.
